Is now a good time to buy a computer

A question asked constantly, with always the same answer — though it is worth knowing why that answer holds.

On forums this comes up weekly: "should I wait for the next generation". The answer is: buy when you need to, because waiting for a better moment is by definition endless.

Something is always coming

The release cycle in this industry has no gaps. Whenever you buy, something faster arrives in three to six months, and within a year something that makes your hardware look mid-range. That is the normal rhythm, not a reason to defer.

When waiting genuinely makes sense

  • A launch is announced and falls within the next four to six weeks. Waiting then costs nothing, and often lowers the price of the previous generation.
  • You are buying a platform rather than a single part — a new socket just before a launch is buying into a dead end.
  • Your current machine works and nothing is blocking you.
